FENRIR’S CUBBIES:
3) Happy New Year? (1POV)

EDDA

Oh, shit! It was going to take more than a clear head to get me out of this predicament. I swear, Vanadís – if this is all your doing, I’ll never forgive you!

I couldn’t see him, but I knew his scent. He was holding me so tight I couldn’t move, but my ears knew his voice like my body knew his touch. I knew this man, and because of that, I knew I was in trouble. My mind was reeling trying to think of a way out, but my traitorous body was already responding to his primal display of dominance. Fuck it! I guess we’re playing stones, after all, V…

“Horse! What the Hel do you think you’re doing?”

“Picking you up, babe.”

“The fuck you are! Why are you here?”

He spun me around and leaned in closer. His forehead touching mine. The pull I’d felt when he came up behind me went on full blast as our eyes met. My chest hurt as I looked into his soul. I swear I could see it. I could see all of his feelings and intentions laid out, as clear as pictures, in front of me. I didn’t understand it, but everything I saw in him gave me an overwhelming sense of being safe. Of coming home. The one thing I’d always dreamed of, but knew I couldn’t have. Overcome with the pain of that realisation, I melted into the embrace of the man who knows me better than anyone else and cried my heart out.

“There’s my good girl.” He placed a soft kiss on the top of my head and rocked me gently in his arms. His hands were moving slowly over my body, in long, flowing strokes. He’s always had an uncanny ability to anchor me and silence my overwrought mind. This was no exception. Resistance was futile at that point, so I let my body relax and felt my mind begin to slip into subspace.

“Fucking horse whisperer!” I muttered, earning myself another primal growl and a sharp neck bite. But he didn’t let me go.

As far as I was concerned, time and space had ceased to exist. I clung to him, oblivious to what was going on around us. I wasn’t even bothered about the risk of us being seen together. All I knew was Him, and He was home. There was no pain, no fear, no frustration anymore. I could stay in this moment, sheltered in his arms, forever. But of course, I never get what I want.

Lewd howls and wolf-whistles erupted all around us, and I was pulled back to reality by the sound of my old friend, Baker, working the bar crowd. “You’ve gotta be kidding me!” The Cubbies were coming, which meant I’d never hear the end of this. Baker had the crowd snapping their fingers in rhythm to Li’l Red Riding Hood, as the big bad wolves made a dramatic entrance.

“You bloody show-offs!” I yelled at them, but I had to laugh as Lowkey, looking goofy as always, and devilishly handsome Scooter danced up and wrapped us in a group hug. Sandwiched between the three of them, each one pulling me in, I seriously felt like I was being ripped apart. But these massive men were my oldest friends, and in the barrage of pictures they were projecting, I saw nothing but love and affection. It was too much for my broken heart to bear, and I unravelled into a sobbing mess in their arms. Gods, how I had missed my ride-or-die family!

For thirteen years, hardly a day went by that the four of us weren’t together. Life was so much easier back then. Sadder, in many ways. Harder too. But definitely easier. Now, I’d spent the past ten years trying to find a way to cope with life on my own. All the crying sessions in the shower aside, I don’t think I’d fully appreciated just how lonely I was feeling all that time.

Our group hug soon turned into a playful tug-of-war, and I was extracted from the man sandwich by the long-haired giant with mischievous eyes. Lowkey spun me around and I hugged him tightly. “Oh, it’s so good to see you, brother,” I laughed. “What are you guys doing here? I thought you’d be partying at the clubhouse tonight.”

“Just taking your old man out for a birthday treat, little mama, but we’re heading back to the party now.”

“What? Just the four of you? And just for the record, it’s not his birthday today.”

“Nah, Hunter and his lot are here too. We got a private room so we could have some privacy and—”

“It’s time for you to come home, mum,” Scooter cut in, pulling me into another bear hug. “You’ve been gone for far too long if you don’t remember that all horses on this side of the world have their birthday today.”

“Nice try, Scoot, but being a stud doesn’t turn a man into a horse.”

I never got a chance to hear his reply as I was passed around like a little ragdoll between my Cubbies. The pull that had been stressing me out all night was strong in all of the boys, but I felt was no push from any of them. I was hugged, twirled, spun around, squeezed and kissed, and it was all accompanied by kind words and playful banter. I was a laughing crying mess and I didn’t even know whether I was happy or sad. There was only one thing I knew for sure. I’d truly missed these crazy buggers and their bloody caveman antics.

In the end, it was Horse, never too keen on sharing me with anyone, who put a stop to it all. He pulled me back into his arms and buried his nose in my hair again. “It’s time to go, love. We have a party to attend.”

I huffed and roll my eyes at him. “No, you have a party to attend. I’m Angel’s bitch tonight and I’m not going anywhere without her.”

“Well, that problem is easily solved. She knows where we’re going. Hunter’s gone to get her.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Horse! Send someone to abort that mission right away. Please! She’ll roundhouse kick his arse into February if she finds him here. He’s supposed to be at home with Juicy tonight.”

I hadn’t even finished the sentence before all Hel broke loose in the corridor outside the bar. “Please, boys, you have to stop them before anyone gets hurt,” I begged, and both Lowkey and Scooter took off.

Angel and Hunter are both formidable fighters, and I couldn’t bear the thought of either of them getting hurt. Or hurting innocent bystanders for that matter. To my relief, the boys soon returned with an irate Angel, and a somewhat sheepish looking Hunter, in tow.

“Are you out of your bloody minds?! Starting a fight in a corridor packed with drunken people? What the fuck were you thinking?!” Normally, I’ll go out of my way to avoid conflict, and I rarely raise my voice to anyone, but we’ve already established that normal had gone out the window that night.

The last two years had taken their toll on me and, for whatever reason, it all seemed to be culminating in the madness I’d experienced in the past two weeks. Either I was finally going insane, or the proverbial shit had well and truly hit the fan. For all I knew, every bad spirit and wretched soul of the underworld had been let loose that night. I had no choice but to unleash the beast to cope with my crippling fear.

“Hunter, you fucking idiot, where the Hel is Juicy?”

“He’s left her with his girlfriend,” Angel hissed behind me.

“Are you mad?! Please, tell me you’re not that stupid!” Hunter’s self-preservation mode must have kicked in, because he had the good sense to keep his mouth shut for a change. He knows better than to argue with me when my teeth are out.

“Horse, he’s not having another drink tonight. He’s gonna be driving first thing in the morning.”

“Angel, my love, I know you want to kick his arse, but you’re not fighting each other drunk. Scoot, set the date for them to take it to the ring. They have nine days. Hunter, you’re bringing Juicy home right after breakfast in the morning. And Horse, you’d better get me the Hel out of here. Now!”

Horse just chuckled and issued the order. “The Wolfmother has spoken, boys. We’re out!” He wrapped an arm around me and motioned for Scoot and Lowkey to assume their usual positions as lead and rear guard. Hunter rallied the rest of them and we left the bar cutting a path through the crowd.

Angel got my coat out and Horse lead me to one of the vans waiting outside. A thrall I’d never seen before jumped out to open the door for me, but just as I was about to climb inside a piercing howl broke through the winter night. We all turned around to see Angel standing by the entrance with her arm around Jonas’s shoulders. She threw her head back and let out another howl, making sure she had the attention of every single Cubbie.

“I’d like to introduce you all to Jonas, the doorknob. Earlier this evening, he thought he could manhandle my bestie for shits and giggles. Obviously, I showed him the error of his ways, but I need you all to remember this cute little face. You never know, he may need further lessons in the future.” I knew she was enjoying the situation, but Jonas paled visibly as he realised he was facing 16 pissed off bikers.

When I felt Horse stiffen by my side, I realised this was going to end badly. He can barely tolerate the Cubbies being affectionate and playful with me; a man deliberately hurting or frightening me is a dead man walking. I had to put a stop to this.

“Listen, he’s already had his arse handed to him tonight, and you guys have a party to attend. I’m sure he didn’t mean to scare me. It was just a joke gone wrong.” Well, that was a blatant lie. I knew exactly what he meant to do to me, but I didn’t want anyone ending up in police custody on my account. There was nothing I could do to save his arse from a good beating or two, but hopefully, I could at least save his life.

I turned around to plead with Horse. “Please, can we just leave?”

He looked deep into my eyes, searching for the truth behind my words and I knew that he knew I was lying. But he didn’t say anything. He just nodded and helped me get into the van. A few minutes later, the thrall was driving us towards the Clubhouse in the former Anti-Aircraft Regiment’s barracks on Södra Berget.

We sat in the back with Lowkey, Scoot and Hunter in front of us. Horse pulled me closer and his hands were all over me. I tried to squirm away from him, but he was having none of it. The boys were howling with laughter as he growled and held me in place. Damn, it was embarrassing. I’ve always tried to keep our relationship under wraps, but he doesn’t care who sees or hears us. As far as he’s concerned I’ve belonged to him since I was three.

At the Clubhouse, he brough me straight to his rooms and backed me up against the wall. I shivered as he trailed a finger from my forehead down to the mermaid pendant with our rune that was nesting in my cleavage.

“I love that you’re wearing them, baby, but there’s one piece missing.”

He kissed my right hand, and each of my fingers before he sucked my ring finger into his mouth. When he pulled it back out, I was wearing a platinum wire ring, one end sporting a fé and the other a kaun rune. It was gorgeous in its simplicity, and it matched the set he’d already given me perfectly.

“FC? For Fenrir’s Cubbies?”

“Yeah… I really want you to wear my collar, but I know how you feel about that so I thought this would have do. Now you have the two of us around your neck, our kids on your arm and our club in your hand. I want you to accept an official position in the club, babe. I want every Cubby to know that we wouldn’t be here without you. And I want them to know that you’re mine. I mean, most of them already know, but we’ve never declared it.”

“I don’t know how I feel about that, Peter.”

“Hmm… I love the way you say my name when we’re alone.”

“Don’t change the subject. What is it you want to tell them, exactly?”

“The truth. About us and about the club.”

“Right, and what official position are you talking about?”

“Whatever you’re comfortable with, babe.”

“Ok, how about this? You’re free to talk about Cubby history as much as you like. It belongs to all of us and you should be proud of what you’ve achieved. But please, Peter, promise me you won’t say anything about me or the kids. Not tonight. I know it’s inevitable, but there’s something we need to discuss before I can let you go down that road. And I’m going to need more time than what we have tonight for that to happen. Are you ok with that?”

“Well, I was ready for a fight at The Palace and a hard no to this, so I’ve already got more than I expected. But I’m afraid there’s one more thing. You have to sing for me. Baker and the guys from the bar are setting up now, and Angel’s here to help you get ready.”

“Yeah, I kinda figured I’d been had when two complete strangers knew my songs and what key I sing them in. But it’s fine. I love singing with Baker, and it’ll keep your fucking joyrides out of my hair. I guess it’s a win – win.”

Laughing he leaned in to kiss my forehead. “Ok, baby girl, I’ll go downstairs now before they send out a search party. Don’t keep me waiting.”

As soon as he left, Angel rushed in with her bag of tricks. My smeared and smudged make-up was soon restored and my wild hair was… Well, let’s just say it was wild but presentable. She booped my nose and winked. “Just promise me not to cry anymore tonight and you’ll be fine, my dove. Now tell me what Horse had to say before we have to go down there.”

I gave her a quick recap, showed her the ring and told her what I’d agreed to. Then we made it down to the Cubbies’ Den and Baker helped us enter the stage. It was a typical Lowkey and Baker party. Great fun, great food and, if I may say so myself, great music. We ended up singing and dancing all through the night, and I managed to keep the anxiety at bay through it all.

It was early morning when I had Scoot take me back upstairs and let me into Horse’s rooms. I was so exhausted I went straight to bed and crawled in under the duvet fully dressed. I must’ve fallen asleep before my head hit the pillow, but at some point, I woke up as Horse slid in next to me. I was vaguely aware of him pulling me on top of him. He fumbled with my dress and I made a half-arsed effort to help him get me out of it.

Too late, I realised it left me sprawled out on top of him in saucy lingerie, but I was beyond caring at that point. I just wanted to sleep.
