F.K. Marlowe, Ship’s Belle

Hello me hearties! The world is coming back to life out there, and all that gorgeous sunshine has even found its way to my heart, which, as you know, has been feeling a bit shivery lately (and not in a fun, horror writing sort of way). I’ve not been in much of a mood for writing of any kind the last couple of months, but I’m gradually putting things back together, sorting through the mess of emotions, and starting to think about a return to some kind of normal, whatever that may look like.

While I’m still not in the right frame of mind to tackle horror, it might be time to get back to playing with words again. I hope you’re revelling in the May warmth, and that you enjoy this month’s newsletter, born of me filling some of my “downtime” (yes, that’s a grim pun) of the last few months with “research reading” of YA fiction. I think I might have the hang of it!

Here’s hoping the following – with apologies to the current Empress of YA fiction, S.J. Maas, gives you a giggle or two.

In This Week’s Ship’s Log

A COURT OF SNARKS AND EGOS

I hated fishing! How I hated it! But since my father had been unfairly ousted from his position as Chief Privy-Secretary of the Royal Marmalade Spoon, our family’s fortunes had fallen so low that the trout I poached from the local duckpond under cover of twilight were our only sustenance.

MARLOWE’S TINY TERRORS

Tiny terrifying tale of the month and silly horror stories I want to write anyway – the May 2024 edition.

These micro tales are a recurring feature in my Ship’s Logs and they can be seen as complements to the monthly Fear Bites on my website.

TIME FOR A TIPPLE

If all the May sunshine has you squinting at the horizon in anticipation of the heady haze of high summer, this cocktail is just for you! Gorgeous orange liqueur is fortified by a hefty slug of rum, while a little splash of sweet peach juice adds the appearance of innocence. Mix it all…

PHOTO INSPIRATION OF THE MONTH

And Finally…

That’s all the silliness and immaturity I think you can handle this month! In two weeks the Cap’n and her Pet Bear are back with a run down of all the fab new fun stuff you can check out on board the Good Ship Resilience!

I’m back two weeks after that, with more daft shenanigans, and possibly even a return to form!

Until then, friendly sharks and plain sailing, shipmates! Xxx

ABOUT F.K. MARLOWE

a blue ship's door with the sign "F.K. BELLE MARLOWE"

F.K. Marlowe is a Shropshire lass who lived in London and Beijing before settling down with her husband, three daughters and rescue pup in Vancouver. She writes horror stories with a tendency to the paranormal, and Young Adult fiction with fangs and sass.

Marlowe doesn’t worry overly much about the placement of semi-colons and the like, having spent far too long pootling about in academia to take them seriously. (She has an Oxford first in English Lit, plus a Master’s and PhD from Leeds). She has, however, discovered that life is the best education for a writer, and plans to continue her studies there as long as possible.
