IT’s INSTAWRIMO time again and today’s prompt for the NaNoWriMo challenge is:

– Dreams & nigthmares

This is going to be a relatively short post, because spoilers, but I think this is a good opportunity to talk a little about Edda’s inner turmoil.

The main character (MC) in the Ulfrheim series is Edda, and she’s something of an enigma. Horse (the male MC) says that she’s otherworldly and when they first met he mistook her for a changeling. But it’s not just the way she looks that sets her apart from other people. Her behaviour, and the way she speaks, are different too.

Something is going on inside that odd looking head of hers, and she’s terrified of letting anyone know what it is. Terrified of ending up all alone if her secret gets out. But what is this secret? Well, it’s related to dreams and nightmares.

Awake or asleep, Edda is plagued by her dreams. As a child she spoke of them and this greatly upset people around her so she learned to keep them to herself when she was reprimanded for “telling tall tales.” Her friends, Horse, Scooter and Lowkey, liked her “fantasies” as they were excellent fodder for the games they played together.

Angel, who came into the picture a few years later, never really speaks about it, but she’s never believed Edda’s lying. And she defends her friend fiercely when people try to bully her or gossip about how weird she is. But then again, Angel has a secret of her own. She has also experienced something that no one would believe if she told them about it.

Edda’s and Angel’s dreams have something in common. They all have a misty green field with a path that leads toward an evergreen forest in them, but that’s where the similarities end. For Angel, the dream is rare and it has never taken her past that green field.

For Edda, however, the field is just the beginning. It’s where all her dreams and nightmares begin, but she knows what’s in the forest beyond the field and it frightens her. She yearns for that place and fears it with equal measure…

Ok, it’s a little cryptic, I know, but I can’t delve too deep into bits I have yet to publish. Let’s talk about you instead.
