Whenever I find words in the posts that I believe may be new or difficult, I linked them to the wiki post where they are explained. Linked words are always this colour and underscored. Let me know if the word/concept you’re looking for isn’t there and I’ll try to add it as soon as I can.

DNF, DO/DID NOT FINISH

Do/Did Not Finish. This is a term that is used to describe books, films, manuscripts, art projects (etc.) you chose to finish. Or the act of actively giving up on a book, film etc because you don’t like it.

It seems to me the readers are split in two factions when it comes to DNFs. One half wouldn’t dream of putting a book down for any reason. They would tell you to grin and bear it as you never know – it may grow on you. I must admit I used to belong to this group.

The other group would simply say that if you’re not enjoying it, you might as well DNF it and pick up another book instead. The one thing they disagree on is how far you need to read before it’s okay to pack it in. Some give it 50 pages, but I have my lines drawn at 10 chapters. I guess it depends a little on the genre too – fantasy books tend to be l-o-o-o-n-g…
